Chhattisgarh State Formation

  1. Central Provinces was formed on 2nd November 1861. Nagpur was its capital. Chhattisgarh was a district in Central Provinces.
  2. Chhattisgarh became a Commissioner’s division when five divisions were made in Central Provinces in 1862. Raipur was its headquarters.
  3. Five princely states Jashpur, Surguja, Udaipur, Changbakhar, and Koria were included in Chhattisgarh from the Chhota Nagpur area of Bengal Province in 1905 and Sambalpur was removed from Chhattisgarh and added to Odisha area of Bengal province. First map of Chhattisgarh was made in this year.
  4. In 1918 Pt. Sunderlal Sharma published the map of Chhattisgarh in his manuscript for the first time. He is therefore known as the first person who dreamt of Chhattisgarh.
  5. In 1924 Raipur Zila Parishad passed a resolution for making a separate Chhattisgarh Province.
  6. In 1939 Pt. Sunderlal Sharma demanded separate Chhattisgarh Province in Tripuri Congress convention.
  7. In 1946 Thakur Pyarelal created Chhattisgarh Shoshan Virodh Manch to campaign for a separate Chhattisgarh Province. This was the first organization for a separate Chhattisgarh.
  8. In 1947 at the time of Independence Chhattisgarh was a part of Central Provinces and Berar.
  9. In 1953 demand of separate Chhattisgarh State was made in the Commission for reorganization of States based on Languages under the chairmanship of Fazal Ali.
  10. Raipur MLA Thakur Ramkrishna Singh demanded separate Chhattisgarh in Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha in 1955. This was the legal effort for a separate Chhattisgarh.
  11. Dr. Khubchand Baghel made Chhattisgarh Mahasabha in 1956 in Rajnandgaon. Dashrath Chowbey was its secretary. In the same year Chhattisgarh was included in Madhya Pradesh when this new state was created.
  12. In 1967 Dr. Khubchand Baghel made Chhattisgarh Bhratitva Sangha with the help of Barrister Chhedilal for a separate Chhattisgarh. Dwarika Prasad Tiwari was its Vice President.
  13. Shankar Guha Niyogi made Chhattisgarh Mukti Morcha in 1976.
  14. In 1983 Shankar Guha Niyogi made Chhattisgarh Sangram Manch and Pavan Diwan made Prithak Chhattisgarh Party.
  15. In 1994 Saja MLA Ravindra Chobey presented a private members resolution for separate Chhattisgarh in Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha. The resolution was passed unanimously.
  16. A Government Official resolution for separate Chhattisgarh was passed on 1st May 1998 in Madhya Pradesh Vidhan Sabha.
  17. On 25th July 2000 Lalkrishna Advani introduced the Bill for creation of Chhattisgarh in Lok Sabha. The bill was passed on 31st July 2000 in Lok Sabha. The bill was introduced in Rajya Sabha on 3rd August 2000. It was passed by the Rajya Sabha on 9th August 2000. President K R Narayan gave his assent on 25th August 2000.
  18. Chhattisgarh State was formed on 1st November 2000 under Article 3 of the Constitution by Madhya Pradesh State Reorganization Act, 2000. Chhattisgarh became the 26th State of India with 3 divisions – Raipur, Bilaspur and Bastar, 16 districts, 96 Tahsils, and 146 blocks. Raipur became the capital of the State and High Court was established in Bilaspur.
  19. The first session of Chhattisgarh Vidhan Sabha took place from 14th December 2000 to 20th December 2000 in Jashpur hall of Rajkumar College Raipur.
